My Cherished Onyx 400F Jan 02, 2008 I went through a string of interfaces on my path to enlightenment. First there was the atrocious Roland VM-3100, then a brief stint with a Firepod, and finally a frustrating battle for stability and grainy audio with a Tascam FW-1804. A couple of years ago, I decided to spring for an Onyx 400F and I haven't turned back since. The early drivers were legendarily flaky, but the newest one is very stable. The audio quality of the four on-board preamps is exceptional, and the A/D converters are very nice to my ears.
This isn't for everyone. Some people will want eight preamps built in. I have an external stereo tube preamp, which gives me a total of six channels of inputs with room for two more if I ever need them. The price is also toward the high end of the pro-sumer pack, but trust me, the audio quality is worth it.
This box is truly underrated, and highly recommended.
Best small studio recording product Jul 10, 2007 Yes, there's cheaper. Yes, there's better. But the Onyx 400f finds it's niche in the small/home studio, where musicians want to capture incredibly rich sound on a budget.
The Onyx 400f provides four high quality pre-amped mic inputs, four XLR inputs and a stereo S/PDIF input. Enough for most bands to get their feet wet on an album or two.
I have to say that buying the 400f was the best thing I've ever done for my home studio. The recordings are amazing, the mixes are easy to manage inside the Tracktion software that comes with the Onyx and Mackie's forums have an incredible community ready to help you tackle any questions you have. Five stars!
